The past two days have been full of a lot of walking. Even more so than the first few days of exploring. We took a taxi to St. Peter's Basilica and meandered our way back home which turned out to be exactly the right thing to do because we came across some delightful shops along the way. We also did the same on day 8 when we returned to the Borghese Museum. My guesstimate is between walking home from each location, combined with the visits themselves, has us close to 15 miles just in the past two days!
Day 7 - St. Peter's Basilica
The basilica is located inside one of the top three smallest countries in the world. Vatican City is it's own country! Can you guess any of the others? We signed up for a guided tour for this venue but that is not my jam, so I just ventured around on my own.
The marble! The art! The dapper guards! It was over the top. I have a friend who is a devout Catholic, so I mailed her a postcard from the site.
We decided to walk the 5 miles home and popped into a place for a must-have plate of carbonara (yes, I put loads of extra parm on that pasta!) and a spritzer. We also stumbled upon a few fun stores to shop in.
Day 8 - Borghese Gallery and Museum
Earlier in the week, we attempted to drop into this museum with no luck (sold out!), so we purchased a pair of tickets for a guided tour. As it turned out, we picked the tour that was in Italian - yikes - so we negotiated an audioguide tour instead. The grounds also include a park which turns out to be the largest park in Rome. The collection was created by a cardinal and includes some incredibly stunning works.
Our journey home also offered an opportunity to squeeze in a few more churches along the way...
